UPC vs EAN-13
Both identify a retail product at checkout and both are GS1 GTINs. The practical difference is one digit, and which GS1 member organisation issued your number.
The short answer
If GS1 issued you a 12-digit number, you have a UPC-A and should print UPC-A. If they issued 13 digits, print EAN-13. You do not choose the symbology — the number you were allocated does.
The two are interchangeable at the scanner: a UPC-A is simply an EAN-13 with a leading zero. Modern point-of-sale systems in every major market read both, so the decision only matters when a legacy in-house system expects a fixed digit count.
Where you do have a choice — for example when adding a barcode to a product sold only outside North America — EAN-13 is the safer default because it is the global format and carries the issuing prefix explicitly.

Choose UPC-A when
- GS1 allocated you a 12-digit GTIN
- You sell primarily through US or Canadian retail
- A trading partner's system explicitly requires 12 digits
Choose EAN-13 when
- GS1 allocated you a 13-digit GTIN
- You sell in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America or globally
- You are barcoding a book from an ISBN-13 starting 978 or 979
