How QR codes actually work

A QR code is a two-dimensional grid of modules that stores data along with Reed-Solomon error-correction blocks. The three large squares in the corners are position markers that let a camera find and orient the grid from any angle, which is why a QR code scans upside down while a barcode does not.

Error correction is why a code with a logo over the middle still works: at the highest level roughly 30% of the pattern can be obscured or damaged and a reader can still reconstruct the payload. It is also why longer payloads produce denser grids — more data means more modules, and more modules means each one is smaller at the same printed size.

The practical takeaway is to keep payloads short, export vector SVG for print, and preserve the quiet zone. If you need to change the destination later, use a dynamic code so the pattern stays the same while the target moves.
