How to choose a barcode symbology

A barcode symbology is just the visual language used to encode your data. Retail symbologies like UPC-A and EAN-13 are fixed-length numeric formats tied to the GS1 system, because a checkout scanner anywhere in the world has to interpret them identically. That rigidity is the point.

Internal symbologies like Code 128 and Code 39 are variable-length and alphanumeric, so they can carry a SKU, a bin location, or a serial number. You control the printer and the scanner, so there is no global registry to satisfy — pick Code 128 unless a downstream system explicitly demands Code 39.

Whatever you choose, print from the SVG, keep a quiet zone of clear space around the symbol, and test-scan a printed sample rather than a screen. Almost every scan failure traces back to resampled raster images, insufficient quiet zone, or bars printed too small.
