What is UPC-A used for?
UPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode used at point of sale across the United States and Canada. The first digits identify the company prefix issued by GS1, the middle block identifies the individual product, and the final digit is a mathematically derived check digit that scanners use to confirm a clean read.
If you are selling a physical product through a US retailer, a marketplace listing that requires a GTIN, or your own POS system, UPC-A is almost always the symbology you need. This generator renders the bars and the human-readable number underneath, and calculates the check digit for you when you supply 11 digits.

How to generate a UPC-A barcode

Enter the first 11 digits of your GS1-issued UPC, or paste all 12 if you already know the check digit.

Set the bar height — retail packaging normally uses the full nominal height rather than a truncated symbol.

Troubleshooting scan failures
The generator rejects your number
UPC-A accepts digits only. Remove spaces, hyphens, and any leading letters, then supply exactly 11 or 12 digits.
Scanners read a different number than expected
You probably supplied 12 digits where the last one was not a valid check digit. Enter the first 11 and let the tool calculate it.
The code scans on screen but not in print
Almost always ink spread or scaling below 80%. Print at 100% magnification first, keep pure black on white, and avoid glossy laminate directly over the symbol.
A retailer rejected the barcode
The symbol is valid, but the number inside must be yours. Retailers verify the GS1 company prefix, so a made-up 12-digit number will fail their onboarding even if it scans.
